Transfer & Trash Pumps – A Comparison

March 14, 2024 by Lucy

Transfer pumps and trash pumps are both used to move water from one place to another. There are a wide variety of water pumps available to use depending on their application, fuel type, size, power and particular features. In this article, we go in-depth on both transfer and trash pumps to assist you in selecting the right pump!

Transfer aka Volume Pumps

Transfer pumps are also known as volume pumps, which are designed to transfer large quantities of water, that is relatively clear and free from debris, from one place to another. Common applications include filling water trucks or tankers, irrigation, stock watering, washdowns and pumping water in and out of dams, pools and other similar structures. Transfer pumps are available as in either petrol or diesel models and come in both single and twin impeller options. Twin impeller pumps give higher pressure, allowing water to flow at a higher rate depending on the required application.

Trash Pumps

In situations that require transferring water contaminated with mud, sand, twigs, rocks, leaves and other debris, a standard transfer pump typically is insufficient. Using a transfer pump on contaminated water can affect their performance, clog the pump, or even cause the motor to break down, resulting in expensive repairs or replacement. Trash pumps are robust pieces of machinery that can handle thick, sludgy water and are specifically designed to handle solid debris and are commonly used to empty debris-filled dams, dewatering flooded areas, managing sewage and other liquids contaminated with chemicals or debris from manufacturing processes.

How do Trash Pumps Work?

Trash pumps draw in dirty water, separate contaminants from the water, then eject filtered water. The exact method of separation varies depending on the trash pump type. However, the most common method is centrifugal force. Centrifugal trash pumps are usually smaller, portable pumps that create an area of low pressure to suck in water and separate contaminants using centrifugal force. Meanwhile a diaphragm trash pump draws water using an air vacuum and siphons contaminants through an impeller.

Trash pumps with a high flow rate are a popular choice in the exploration drilling, mining, earthmoving and construction industries. Moving murky water fast!

How to Select the Correct Pump?

Before purchasing a pump, we suggest running through the below checklist!

  • Are you transferring clean or dirty water with debris?
  • Do you require your pump to be easily portable?
  • What maximum flow rate and pressure do you require?
  • Are you wanting a diesel or petrol model?
  • What is the appropriate size model for your pumping needs?
  • Do your required a pump that is primed or capable of running dry?
  • What accessories do you require?
