The higher strength and heat dissipation of cast iron makes it well-suited for pumps required to handle high pressure and mechanical strain. Cast-iron pumps are highly resistant when it comes to pumping abrasive materials such as sand and dirt. However, it is important to note cast-iron pumps are not suited to pumping corrosive materials such as saltwater or chemical water.
